Nursing Ausbildung
Ausbildung, also known as vocational training or apprenticeship, is a common educational and professional path in Germany. It’s profession-related training that is leading you towards a certain job. The acute increasing nursing shortages in Germany and worldwide has focused attention on the need to find more effective ways to recruit and retain nursing students.

In Germany, the common option for most students to do the Nursing is to go through an apprenticeship, also known as “Ausbildung” in a German hospital.
Nursing Ausbildung is a form of Dual Vocational Training (DVT) where the students attend nursing vocational school/ college and work simultaneously in healthcare facilities, earning a regular income in the process. With Ausbildung, you will gain both theoretical and practical knowledge needed to prepare you for the working field.
Program Entry Requirements
School Requirements
For Ausbildung in Germany, applicants don’t need a specific school-leaving diploma to start a professional training program. In general, most educational backgrounds are accepted. Most accepted certificates are:
1. Middle school diploma or
2. the secondary school leaving certificate together with proof
of a) successful completion of vocational training of at least two years’ duration or
b) successful completion of training in nursing care (nursing, geriatric care) or
3. the successful completion of ten-year general school education.
Personal Requirements
· Health suitability and Official certificate of good conduct
· Sufficient knowledge of the German language at least level B1and preferably B2
· High social skills and strong empathy
Program Overview
Before starting your training, you will sign a training contract with your future training healthcare facility. This contract specifies in writing, for example, your training allowance, vacation days, working hours, and the duration of your training.
The entire apprenticeship lasts approximately 3 years. This full-time training program entails 2,100 hours of classroom instruction at a Vocational Colleges (usually at a partner school of the hospital) and 2,500 hours of working experience in the hospital.
Theory part during professional training
Classes at the vocational school take place either regularly once or twice a week, or as a block of several weeks. During the theoretical phase, you will gain technical knowledge but also necessary skills for your future profession.
Practical part during professional training
The practical phase of the dual training takes place in the company where you are employed. Depending on the firm’s size, trainees usually go through various departments to gain experience.
At the end of your program, you are required to pass a state examination to successfully conclude your training. Upon the completion of your apprenticeship, you will be able to work at hospitals, nursing homes, outpatient care facilities, health insurance companies, and so on.
Training Allowance
Due to the unique training system of the apprenticeship, there are no training fees for the duration of the apprenticeship. In addition, you will receive a training allowance throughout the program. The collective agreement applies to trainees in public service institutions:
1st year of training approx. EUR 1,190
2nd year of training approx. EUR 1,252
3rd year of training approx. EUR 1,353
You also can earn additional money if you work additional night shifts or public holiday shifts. You are also eligible to earn overtime allowance.
